Afghanistan – 2 Afghanis – P-21a – 1939 – AU UNC Grade, RARE SERIAL NUMBER This 2 Afghanis banknote, issued in 1939 and catalogued as Pick 21a, comes from a formative period in Afghan national history, under the rule of King Mohammed Zahir Shah (r. 1933–1973). It was printed at a time when Afghanistan was carefully balancing tradition with slow modernization, while maintaining strict neutrality on the eve of global war. Printed by Bradbury Wilkinson & Co., the note is beautifully engraved and features distinctly Afghan design motifs. The obverse shows the Royal Crest of Afghanistan, complete with mosque imagery, flags, wheat stalks, and radiating rays — deeply symbolic of sovereignty, faith, and fertility.

Unlike earlier issues (for example, the 100 Afghanis “Green Daud”), the 500 Afghanis P‑51a is printed almost entirely in vivid shades of blue—background patterns, borders, and security fibers all take on a bright azure hue.
